Case Competitions

CapU’s Accounting Case Competition - 2022

REGISTRATION DEADLINE: Thursday, January 30 @ 12PM. Limit of 5 teams per division.

 

Open to all CapU accounting students that have taken (or are currently taking) BFIN 141 or BFIN 193.

(While all accounting students are eligible for this internal competition, the eligibility of students for the 2020 CPA BC Case Competition will not be known until CPA BC releases the 2020 rules later this year or early next year)

Students will compete in teams of two for this internal case competition. Each team will be judged and ranked based on the team’s video submissions. Based on the rankings, top students will be invited to represent CapU in the CPA BC Case Competition and will be placed in teams as selected by faculty.

Team categories (teams of 2 CapU students):

Junior Division: both students must each have 36 credits or less at any post-secondary institution (worldwide) as at September 1, 2020. Limit of 5 teams.

Senior Division: one or both students each has more than 36 credits at any post-secondary institution (worldwide) as at September 1, 2018. Limit of 5 teams.

Workshop: a free workshop will be provided to get you ready for the case competition. The workshop date is Tuesday, November 20 at 11:30am and will be held on campus (classroom TBA). Your team must register for the case competition before being able to attend the workshop.

Official Rules

 

  • Competition Case Study – the case study will be released to all participating teams via email by 8am on Friday, Nov. 23, 2018.

  • Each team will have until 12 noon on Sunday, Nov. 25, 2018 to submit by email, a link to their video submission which has been uploaded on YouTube. (Each team will have to create a YouTube account and learn on their own how to create & upload videos. The video must be set to “unlisted” on YouTube (do not set to Public or Private))

  • Each competing team’s video submissions will be judged on the presentation style, professionalism, knowledge of the case, analysis, strategic implementation & recommendations and creativity as presented in the video. Ensure any PowerPoint, visual aids or screen projections are clearly visible in your recording, as no other submissions (e.g., Word, PDF, Excel) will be allowed.

  • Only the team members and their voices should appear/be heard in the video along with any visual aids.

  • Video presentations must be between 5 minutes (minimum) to 7 minutes (maximum) long (total video length including any blank or silent footage). Videos shorter than 5 minutes or longer than 7 minutes will be automatically disqualified.

  • All videos must be uploaded onto YouTube by noon on Sunday, Nov. 25, 2018 and an email with the video link sent to  capubfin@gmail.com  also by noon on Sunday, Nov. 25, 2018 (with your student names in the Subject Line). The video should be set as “unlisted”, so only those with the link may access and watch the video.

  • The video must be named as follows (place your actual names in place of YOUR NAMES): CapU 2018 Case Competition – YOUR NAMES

Judging

 

  • Judges will be CapU accounting faculty.

  • Winning teams will be announced by mid-December 2018 through the Capilano Accounting Association website and other social media channels. Based on the CPA BC Accounting Case competition rules (TBA) the top eligible students/teams will be invited to participate in a mentoring & coaching program leading up to the CPA BC case competition in spring 2019.

Hints on creating the video: Many phones, laptops and tablets have good video recording capabilities. As well, there are some good free video editing software available. Here are some suggestions:
